The Tunisian community in Japan has largely grown around study and research. Since 1970, over 1,800 Tunisians have trained in Japan, and the Tunisian government sends scholars there every year. Around the Embassy of Tunisia in Tokyo and the JICA-training alumni network, some 912 Tunisians live there today.
The community & the embassy
The Embassy of Tunisia in Tokyo anchors the community; it supports students, researchers and businesses, and coordinates the major milestones — from Expo 2025 in Osaka, where Tunisia had a national pavilion, to the 2026 celebrations of the 70th anniversary of bilateral relations.
Students & researchers
Since 1970, over 1,800 Tunisians have trained in Japan in infrastructure, industry, water, health and higher education (the KCCP programme). The ABE Initiative lets young talents pursue a master’s or doctorate there, often followed by a corporate internship. Alumni are gathered in a dedicated beneficiaries’ association, which keeps the Japan–Tunisia link alive long after they return.
Faces of the community
The community also shines through its talents. In 2026 it was a Tunisian resident in Japan, Mariam Chaieb, who designed the official logo for the 70th anniversary of Tunisia–Japan relations, chosen among entries open to nationals of both countries. At Expo 2025 in Osaka, the Tunisian pavilion hosted concerts (‘TAIKO meets Tabbel’) and a kendo delegation.
